DUBAI: The United Arab Emirates’ Ministry of Health and Prevention confirmed 1,723 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, state news agency WAM reported.
The new cases were detected after the ministry conducted 150,244 COVID-19 tests in the past 24 hours and increased the total of infected people since the start of the pandemic to 206,092, the agency added.
The ministry has also confirmed 1,607 more recoveries and three additional fatalities, increasing the total number of recovered patients to 183,007 and the death toll to 665.
‏On Tuesday, the UAE discovered a “limited number” of cases of people infected with the new coronavirus variant in the country, the first confirmed cases of a more contagious COVID-19 mutant in the Gulf region.
The official government spokesman Omar Al-Hammadi said at a press briefing on Tuesday that those affected had traveled from abroad, without specifying where or the number of the cases.
“In light of the emergence of the new emerging strain of the coronavirus in Britain, and in conjunction with the continuous investigations by the health sector, it has been proven that there are limited cases in the country and received from abroad,” he said.
